The legendary Sunil Gavaskar believes that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not be part of India's 2027 ODI World Cup squad. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Gavaskar said that both the batsmen have performed well in the 50-over format but they are unlikely to make it to the big tournament, which is still two years away. The BCCI top brass must have discussed plans for the next cycle of the World Test Championship with both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, which would have influenced their decisions to retire before the England tour.
Virat Kohli surprised many by calling time on his Test career, saying the decision wasn't easy but it felt right. India Today reported that Kohli had informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision but a senior official was trying to convince him to play in England in the upcoming five-Test series, starting June 20. "To play or not to play is a personal decision. But I am not surprised because I felt there were going to be big changes after what happened in Australia. So I am not surprised that he decided to call it quits," Gavaskar said. Both Kohli and Rohit suffered poor performances during the 2024-25 Test season, and questions were raised over their future in the longest format after a disastrous tour of Australia. India lost 0-3 to New Zealand at home last season - a historic first - after which they were beaten 1-3 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Both the senior batsmen struggled to lead the batting unit from the front, coming under tight scrutiny.
