Gadkari Hits Back at Criticism of E20 Fuel Policy

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, speaking at the 65th SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) Annual Convention, strongly defended the government's E20 petrol rollout program. Addressing concerns, he said there was a “paid political campaign” against him, which has now been proven false after the Supreme Court rejected petitions challenging the E20 policy.

“All testing agencies have confirmed there is no problem with implementation,” Gadkari said, highlighting the government’s vision of cleaner, greener fuels for India’s future.

Push for GST Relief on Car Scrappage

Gadkari also revealed that he had urged the Finance Minister to consider GST relief for customers scrapping old vehicles in exchange for new purchases. He stressed that such a move would:

• Provide relief to consumers,

• Boost demand for the auto industry, and

• Encourage adoption of cleaner technologies.

The minister also called on automakers to offer discounts and incentives to consumers opting for scrappage, ensuring a smoother transition toward sustainable mobility.

Call for Biofuel-Powered Vehicles

Reiterating his commitment to sustainable transport, Gadkari urged the industry to accelerate rollout of biofuel-powered vehicles. He praised automakers for their successful transition from BSIV to BSVI emission norms and assured that India would remain aligned with global standards, including BSVI and CAFE norms.

Looking ahead, he projected that India’s logistics costs would drop to 9% of GDP by 2025, a key milestone in making the economy more competitive.

Supreme Court Rejects Plea Against E20 Blending

The Supreme Court recently dismissed a PIL that challenged the Centre’s Ethanol Blending Program (E20 fuel). The program mandates petroleum blended with 20% ethanol, aiming to reduce crude oil imports and benefit sugarcane farmers.

The Center defended its decision, stating that no "outside influence" should dictate India's fuel choices. Officials argued that E20 would:

• Strengthen energy security,

• Reduce import bills,

• Support the agricultural economy.

However, the petitioners expressed concerns over compatibility issues, particularly for vehicles manufactured before April 2023, warning of potential mileage drops, material degradation, and denial of warranty claims.
